A few weeks ago I wrote about a program to raise money for the fight against cancer.  (Read it here.)  This event happens tonight on ABC, CBS, and NBC simultaneously.  I think this is a cause to get behind.  Cancer has touched most of us either personally or through a family member.  I have very little confidence in the government’s ability to get things done.  Here’s our chance to see some results without waiting for the government to move.  Tune in - it promises to have some good entertainment along with the pitch to raise funds.  And, maybe, we can all learn something new.  Stand Up To Cancer!

I was watching The View this morning with Katie Couric as a guest. She was talking about a program (Stand Up to Cancer) she is involved in to raise money for cancer research. They talked a lot about the government having failed to fund the research forcing them to go into the private sector for donations.

It is my understanding and constant opinion that anything the government gets involved in becomes a lot more expensive and a lot more complicated than need be. Keeping this in mind - doesn’t it make sense to bypass the government and get things done without their interference? I would much rather donate $1.00 to cancer research (or anything else) than be taxed that same $1.00. I have great confidence that most of what I donate is going to be used directly for cancer research whereas that $1.00 in taxes is going to be eaten up by bureaucracy and very little of it actually end up funding research.

Do you agree or disagree with my position on this? I’d love to hear from you either way.

For more information on donating to cancer research check out this website.

Every so often I get a really good political ‘funny’ in my e-mail.  Mostly these are at the expense of the Democrats.  Maybe the Republicans just aren’t as funny.  Maybe my e-mail buddies are more often Republican than Democrat.  Whatever the reason for this disparity I don’t necessarily espouse one party or one candidate.  That being said, here is a good one.  I hope it makes you laugh.

Hillary and Obama were on a boat.

The boat sank in a big storm.

There was no lifeboat…

Who was saved?

I share a home with my daughter, her husband and her children. She has four children ranging in age from 4 to 10. If there is one lesson to learn from sharing a home with children it is that peace begins with each individual. It then spreads to include those with whom we live. If our homes fail to produce peace, we will never be at peace with the world. I long for world peace - love and harmony shared by all mankind. I work for peace in my home - love and harmony shared by siblings, parents, and grandparents. When I achieve the latter, I will go to work on the former.

Mimi Writes had a good idea and decided to share it with others. I heard about it from Roger at Idaho Photo. Below is the story from Mimi herself. This is not a meme for which I will be tagging you. Please tag yourself and join the BlogBlast for Peace on June 4, 2008. I’ve already begun working on my post for peace. I think this is an idea worth supporting. BlogBlast For Peace Meme ~ Join The Revolution
Here are the rules and the story.
Copy this into a post, ADD YOUR NAME to the bottom of the tag list and tag as many people as you’d like.
The Peace Globe project began in the fall of 2006
with a simple post from one blog, Mimi Writes. The post ignited a flame in the blogosphere. The flame became a passion. The passion became a movement. It amazingly traveled from blog to blog to blog across the globe. Bloggers wrote passionate articles on what peace means to them, along with the promise of three Latin words scribbled on a globe - Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) - branded with the integrity of their names or blog names. It was positively inspiring to watch. And it began to happen all over the world - from Singapore to China to Afghanistan to Brooklyn.

It was simple. And powerful.
In less than one week bloggers from all across the globe will blog for peace.
We will speak with one voice. One subject. One day.
Won’t you join us? June 4, 2008

When I received this in my e-mail, I thought immediately of my friend, Dane Bramage. So, I publish this for Dane and for anyone else who enjoys a good jab at the Democrats.

Republican vs Democrat
I generally avoid discussing politics, but I love political humor.  It is, after all, election season in the USA.  I hope some of these quotes will make you laugh.  I hope equally that they will make you pause and think for a moment.

When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President; I’m beginning to believe it.
- Clarence Darrow

I can’t quite decide whether that is a good thing.  I guess it depends on which anybody is elected.

It is inexcusable for scientists to torture animals; let them make their experiments on journalists and politicians.
- Henrik Ibsen

Journalists and politicians seem not to be very popular.  I wonder why that is.

Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it.
- Mark Twain

Well said, Mr. Twain.  I’ve had similar thoughts from time to time.  I’m nearly certain it’s the imbeciles.

“Scientists announced today that they have discovered a cure for apathy. However, they claim no one has shown the slightest interest in it.”
- George Carlin -

George Carlin - the older I get the more I agree with his views.  That’s rather frightening.  Has he changed or have I?

“Listen, strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives itself from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.” –from MontyPython and The Quest For The Holy Grail

I can’t help wondering:  Which is the bigger farce?

“Politics consists in the art of taking votes from the poor and money from the rich under the pretext of protecting each from the other.” –anonymous

Is, or should, that be our greatest priority?  Protecting ourselves from ourselves?  Are we not one country united?  Do we not all long for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?

“The direct use of force is so poor a solution to the problems of limited resources that it is commonly employed only by small children and great nations.” –David Friedman

How different would our world be if we had all learned to “play nice” and to share our toys when we were children?  I fear that selfishness may bring about the downfall of our society.

“History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives.” –Abba Eban

Perhaps there is hope ahead.  I think we have just about reached the point of exhaustion.  Now we will be forced to behave wisely at last.

I welcome other comments and opinions  - political or otherwise.  Just, please, remember to be polite and respect the opinions of others.
